Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment to Save an Infected Tooth

Root canal treatment is a procedure used to treat teeth in which the decay or infection has reached the dental nerve (pulp). When bacteria spread deep inside the tooth, patients may experience severe tooth pain, sensitivity, swelling, or discomfort while chewing.

If left untreated, the infection can worsen and may eventually lead to abscess formation or tooth loss.

At Blez Dental Clinic we provide root canal treatment with the goal of preserving the natural tooth whenever possible.

Many patients feel anxious when they hear the words “root canal treatment,” but modern dental techniques and local anesthesia help make the procedure much more comfortable than many people expect.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the dental pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep cavities, cracks, or trauma allow bacteria to enter the pulp, inflammation or infection can occur.

Root canal treatment involves carefully removing the infected nerve tissue, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the root canal, and sealing the tooth to help prevent reinfection.

The main purpose of treatment is to save the natural tooth and eliminate pain and infection without needing extraction.

Common Symptoms That May Require Root Canal Treatment

Some patients may notice clear symptoms, while others may not feel pain until the condition becomes more severe.

  • Persistent toothache
  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • Swelling around the gums
  • A darkened tooth color
  • Gum abscess or pimple-like swelling
  • Pain that wakes you up at night

If you experience any of these symptoms, early examination is recommended to prevent the infection from spreading further.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

One of the most common concerns patients have is whether root canal treatment is painful. In reality, the procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and many patients feel that the treatment is similar to receiving a normal filling.

The purpose of root canal treatment is actually to relieve pain caused by infection and inflammation inside the tooth.

Depending on the condition of the tooth, treatment generally requires approximately 2–3 visits.

What Happens After Root Canal Treatment?

After the infected nerve tissue has been removed, the tooth may become weaker and more fragile compared to a healthy tooth. For this reason, the dentist often recommends placing a post and crown after treatment to help strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure.

The final crown also helps restore chewing function and improve the appearance of the tooth.

The type of restoration recommended may vary depending on the location and condition of the tooth.

Can Root Canal Treatment Be Avoided?

In many cases, root canal treatment becomes necessary because cavities are left untreated for a long period of time.

Preventive dental care is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of deep decay and nerve infection.

  • Brushing teeth after meals
  • Daily flossing
  • Regular dental check-ups
  • Professional teeth cleaning and tartar removal every 6 months
  • Early treatment of cavities before they become severe

Early detection can often allow cavities to be treated with simple fillings before they reach the nerve.
