Inlay & Onlay
Inlay and Onlay Treatment for Damaged or Decayed Teeth
When a cavity becomes too large for a regular filling but the tooth is still healthy enough to avoid a crown, inlay or onlay treatment may be recommended. Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations designed to repair damaged teeth while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.
At Blez Dental Clinic, we provide ceramic inlay and onlay restorations that are carefully designed to restore both the strength and appearance of the tooth. These restorations are commonly used for teeth with moderate to large cavities, cracked teeth, or old fillings that need replacement.
Compared to conventional fillings, inlays and onlays are generally stronger, more durable, and provide a more precise fit because they are individually fabricated based on the patient’s dental impression.
What Is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?
Although both treatments are similar, the difference mainly depends on how much of the tooth needs to be restored.
Inlay
An inlay is used when the damaged or decayed area is located within the grooves of the tooth and does not extend to the outer cusps. It fits precisely into the affected area, similar to a puzzle piece.
Inlays are often recommended when:
- The cavity is too large for a regular filling
- The tooth structure is still strong enough to avoid a crown
- An old filling needs replacement
- Better durability and aesthetics are desired
Onlay
An onlay is used when the damage is more extensive and involves one or more cusps of the tooth. Because it covers a larger area than an inlay, it helps strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure.
Onlays are sometimes referred to as a “partial crown” because they restore a significant portion of the tooth without fully covering it like a traditional crown.
Advantages of Ceramic Inlays and Onlays
Ceramic restorations are popular because they combine durability with a natural appearance. The color can be matched closely to the surrounding teeth, making the restoration blend naturally into the smile.
Benefits of ceramic veneers include:
- Natural and aesthetic appearance
- Stronger and more durable than regular fillings
- Resistant to staining and discoloration
- Precise fit for better long-term stability
- Suitable for smile makeover treatment
- Metal-free restorations
With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, ceramic inlays and onlays can last for many years.
Treatment Process
Inlay and onlay treatment usually requires two visits.
During the first appointment, the dentist removes the damaged or decayed part of the tooth and prepares the area for restoration. An impression or digital scan is then taken and sent to the dental laboratory where the custom restoration is fabricated.
A temporary restoration may be placed while waiting for the final piece to be completed.
During the second visit, the dentist carefully checks the fit, color, and bite before bonding the inlay or onlay permanently onto the tooth.
Who May Be Suitable for a Dental Bridge?
- Large cavities
- Cracked or weakened teeth
- Old fillings that are damaged or leaking
- Teeth with heavy chewing pressure
- A desire for a more natural-looking restoration
Early treatment can help protect the tooth and reduce the risk of more complex treatment later on.
