Dental Implants for Replacing Missing Teeth
Losing a tooth can affect much more than appearance alone. Missing teeth may gradually impact chewing ability, speech, bite balance, and even the surrounding jawbone over time.
Dental implants are considered one of the most stable and long-term solutions for replacing missing teeth because they are designed to function similarly to natural tooth roots.
At Blez Dental Clinic, we provide implant treatment using the Straumann implant system from Switzerland, which is widely recognized internationally for its quality, precision, and long-term reliability.
Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth, or to support bridges and dentures depending on each patient’s oral condition.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth.
After the implant integrates with the surrounding bone, a crown, bridge, or denture is attached on top to restore appearance and chewing function.
Because implants are fixed securely in the bone, many patients feel that they function more naturally compared to removable dentures.
Advantages of Dental Implants
Dental implants are often chosen because they provide both functional and aesthetic benefits.
- Natural appearance and feel
- Improved chewing ability
- Stable and fixed solution for missing teeth
- Helps preserve jawbone structure
- Does not require removing neighboring healthy teeth
- Suitable for smile makeover treatment
Many patients also report improved confidence when eating, speaking, and smiling after implant treatment.
Implant Consultation and Examination
Before starting implant treatment, the dentist will carefully evaluate the patient’s oral condition. A CT scan is commonly used to assess the amount, thickness, and height of the jawbone to determine whether implant placement is possible.
If bone volume is insufficient, additional procedures such as bone grafting may be recommended to help create a stable foundation for the implant.
The treatment plan may vary depending on:
- Bone condition
- Gum health
- Number of missing teeth
- Medical history
- Smoking habits
etc
Implant Treatment Process
1. Healing Period After Extraction
If the tooth has already been extracted, healing time is usually required before implant placement. In many cases, approximately 2–3 months are needed for the bone and gums to heal properly before taking a CT scan.
Once the scan results are available, the dentist will discuss the treatment plan and surgical schedule.
2. Implant Surgery
On the day of surgery, local anesthesia is used to help patients remain comfortable during the procedure.
The implant fixture (titanium screw) is placed into the jawbone. If necessary, bone grafting may be performed at the same time for patients with insufficient bone volume.
The surgical procedure generally takes approximately 30–60 minutes depending on the complexity of the case.
3. Healing and Bone Integration
After implant placement, the implant gradually fuses with the surrounding jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This healing phase generally requires approximately 4–6 months depending on bone condition and healing response.
During this period, the stability of the implant is monitored carefully by the dentist.
4. Impression and Crown Fabrication
Once healing is complete and the implant is stable, impressions or digital scans are taken to fabricate the final crown.
The crown is customized to match the surrounding teeth as naturally as possible in both color and shape.
5. Final Crown Placement
After the final restoration is completed, the crown is attached to the implant and adjusted carefully to ensure comfortable biting and natural function. At this stage, implant treatment is considered complete.
Total Treatment Time
The overall implant treatment process generally requires approximately 7–10 months depending on:
・Healing speed
・Bone condition
・Whether bone grafting is required
・Individual oral condition
Although implant treatment takes time, many patients choose implants because of their long-term stability and natural feel.
Caring for Dental Implants
Good oral hygiene and regular dental maintenance are important for maintaining implant health long-term. We generally recommend:
- Brushing and flossing daily
- Daily flossing or use of interdental cleaning tools
- Wearing a night guard if grinding teeth
- Regular dental check-ups and cleaning
With proper care, implants can function successfully for many years.
